With 2020 in full force, I’ve been asked about how I set and manage my personal goals.

In this article, I will cover the following:
• My framework to goal setting
• Why each section is important to me
• An example goal for each section (2020)
• Accountability
• Final Thought

I want to start with the first three bullet points of my framework to goal setting, why they’re important to me, and how I hold myself accountable. The break up my life into 5 categories: Personal, Mental/Spiritual, Professional, Financial, and Health/Fitness. I will set 3 goals per section that will range from quick monthly challenges to ones that will go on throughout the year. For my longer goals, I will tie in some sort of daily practice as this will be an ongoing habit.

Personal:
The personal section is straight forward as these are goals specific to my interest. For anyone that follows me on social media (@theomarromero), you would see post around the books I’m reading. Growing up I hated reading but a few years back I decided to integrate reading into my life. Today, I read one book a month with genres ranging from business, technology, fitness, or autobiographies.

Example – This year, I will read one book a month.

Mental / Spiritual:
Up until my late 20’s, I didn’t ever consider mental health or spirituality a priority. It isn’t that I didn’t think it was important it was just that it wasn’t something on my mind. When I think about my mental / spiritual goals, I want to think of ways to get more in touch with my inner self and bring fulfillment. For me, my relationship with significant other and my family is what brings me fulfillment. Other areas you can think of would be around challenging yourself to meditate or do yoga.

Example – This year, I am challenging myself to quarterly 24 hour fast from food and devices (TV, Phone, and Computers).

Professional:
I’m a firm believer in elevating your standards with whatever industry you’re in. It’s important to always set yourself up for success as we know industries and companies change. For that reason, I am always looking for ways to add bullet points or case studies to my resume.

Example – This year, I am looking to add my personal training certification to my resume.

Financial:
Our family didn’t grow up with much money. We got by and I’m extremely grateful for the life I have been given. I’ve been blessed to have been able to go to college and land a career that’s allowed me to become financially stable. For that reason, I am always implementing strategies to lay a foundation for the next generation of our family. I don’t believe that anything is guaranteed in life so it’s my job to think long term and set us up for success.

Example – This year, I will be reviewing my finances once a week, every week, for the entire year.

Health / Fitness:
As a fitness professional, it is my job to not only live the part but also be looking for ways to elevate the game. This is important to me because I never want to become complacent which will net to becoming irrelevant. Even if you’re not a fitness professional, you can set a goal to around doing a race or going to the gym X amount a times a week.

Example – The year, I will be placing in the Top 10 of my age group for a Spartan race.

Accountability:
Having goals are great but how do I go about holding myself accountable? For me, I write these goals down on a whiteboard and hang it up in my bedroom. It’s the first thing I look at in the morning and is my reminder of what I’m striving for.

I share my goals with all of my mentors. I have different mentors for different pillars of my life. I do my best to stay in touch with my mentors throughout the year and also do what I can to help them. Find someone who you can build a win/win relationship. This will create a social support system and increase your chance of succeeding or executing on your goal(s).

Final Thought:
If you’re doing something you’ve never done before, it’s going to be uncomfortable at first and that’s ok. Allow yourself to feel that and embrace it. It shows that you’re human and actually care about what you’re doing. You can also expect to have people discourage you. You can choose to allow those voices to hold you back, ignore them, or use them as fuel. For me, I use the negative comments of others to fuel my drive. Most people don’t like change and like things the way they are. If you’re looking to elevate your life and try something new, do it. If you fail, learn from the experience and build upon that.

We live in a world where you truly can have anything you want.
It may not come easy but the opportunity is there.
What does the next chapter in your life look like?

-Omar
