As an entrepreneur, one of the biggest lessons I’m learning is that you need to let time do it’s thing. I am a Type A person with ambitious goals of becoming a leader within the fitness industry through my company Unavida. I talk about time because as a millennial, I want things now but deep inside, I know that the best things are worth waiting for. If becoming a leader within an industry was easy, everyone would be one. To become a leader, I believe you need to be a master of your craft. In order to be a master of your craft, you need to have not just the knowledge base but experience and wisdom. I believe that the experience and wisdom are more important because you have X amount of reps under your belt. To me, this is important to keep top of mind because it separates the difference between a motivated mindset and a purposeful mindset.

When I think of a motivated mindset, I think of the first time I started working out and exercising. I was excited and couldn’t get enough of it. I would go through spurts of working out consistently then taking a few weeks off (sound familiar?). At the time, I didn’t think too much into it besides that I was “ready to get back at it” and embrace a healthy lifestyle. This cycle made it’s rounds a few times until I started getting into jiu jitsu. It was at that time that I needed to be healthy in order to participate (more like defend for my life) in the sport. While jiu jitsu was exercise in itself, I learned quickly that my cardiovascular (cardio) health was lower than it should’ve been. I would roll (grapple) for a minute which felt like an hour and I’d be left gasping for air. Not the best look for someone in his early twenties. It was at this time that it started to click for me. If I work on my cardio outside of training sessions, I could probably last longer during rounds and focus more on technique versus not dyeing. When I tell it like this, it almost seems so obvious but in that moment it was like a light bulb moment.

For me, that light bulb moment is what brought purpose to exercising as a lifestyle habit versus something I did every couple of weeks. I wanted to be better as an individual before I could be better as a jiu jitsu grabbler. I can’t tell you that everything was sunshine and rainbows because it wasn’t. There were numerous days (and still today) that I woke up where I didn’t want to go running or exercise but this is where the purpose mindset kicks in. My motivation to exercise wore off and the purpose (become a better jiu jitsu grappler) kicked in. I was progressing in my skill set from a grappler standpoint so my overall health become more of a focal point.

I don’t think that everyone needs to go through the pain of someone choking you out in order to experience your light bulb moment. I do believe that motivation is a great tool to get someone to start their next goal but to view motivation as just that, a tool. These feelings of excitement wear off and I believe in being ready to embrace that moment. When I think of purpose, I think of “my why.”

Today, I am focused on building Unavida into a business that will be recognized as a leader in the fitness industry. When I came up with the idea, I was excited and couldn’t get enough of it. As I approach the 90 day mark since it’s inception, I’ve had moments of not being motivated or feel the need to make more videos. I reflected back to my purpose behind the company (it’s mission statement) of elevating the lives of its members and surrounding communities through media. If I don’t do what I committed to doing, I am not living up to my purpose.

Everyone’s journey starts at different points in their life (and not always fitness related). It could be something completely different like painting or creating music. The common denominator fueling all of these practices is the purpose. For me, purpose is what gets me out of bed at 4:30 am excited to start my day. If you’re on the fence of starting your next thing, I believe in writing down that purpose somewhere you could see everyday and be reminded. Everyone’s purpose is different but yours is yours and noone can take that from you.

What do you want to leave behind?
